The westward of the twinned capital cities of the Free Republic of Volfor, Vol is the defacto political and economic powerhouse of the northern country of Volfor.
They say its paved with gold. All shit glistens in the rain, my friend, and so will yours unless you listen to me very closely. Someone might have your eye out with this here blade, if you are not careful...—Attrib. "McGivennis", source unknown, folklore
History
The free Republic of Volfor is ruled from the northern city of Vol and it's twin city Furangar. It is a pleural society with humans, elves, dwarves, haflings, gnomes, dragonborne and others living a free lifestyle after the republic seceded from the Kingdom to the south during the Royal Wars.
Layout
The city comprises offices of many of the guilds of the republic, with public facing areas of the Guilds of Artisans, Artificers, Bardic colleges, and Masons, Carpenters &c. Magical shenanigans are dealt with by an offshoot of The Concurrence set up by ____ who left the order many centuries previously.
The Arch
The Arch is a seven story town house district that runs the length of the Procession Road towards the Twinned Bridge (aka the Ghost Walk). Originally intended to be the King's court in the north, the winter housing is palatial in scope and in design. The front of the building, to the south of the roadway, is ordained in a marble frieze of statues depicting the draconic creation mythos, with the nine dragons displayed prominently and paying fealty to the crown of platinum and gemstone intended as the Regal crown of Sudvanne. Following the events of the fall of Tinch and the global earthquakes that followed, the diorama was damaged and the crown's impeccable form was cracked. An event that some considered a warning to the royalty in the south and became almost a prediction of the events in the Royal Wars.
Ghost Walk
The famous marble bridge-way between the cities of Vol and Furangar was a crowning achievement of the stonemasons of The Amahi. Designed by Harriden, the construction of the 17 spans of the Twinned bridge suspended a full 200 feet above the coral lagoon took the combined efforts of some 1200 masons and engineers 16 years to complete, and ushered in a new era of commerce to the twin cities. The history of the bridge was solemn, as it is thought some 250 workers perished during the works, following industrial accidents that were blamed on, in part, by sloppy working conditions and - if the statements of workers at the time are to be believed - direct action by spirits against the workforce. Despite the setbacks and sanguine history, the bridge opened to the public with much fanfare. A wonder of recent technology, the bridge is a marvel of the age, though this humble editor would wager it would be a haunting place at night in the fog and funk of northern Volfor.
