The lakeside town of Cosewell has few causes to celebrate. A sleepy air fills the streets, until the monks of Xavarath have one of their many celebrations!

History

Cosewell is a market town – a place which needs to exist as the travel through to Cottonford and Abbachtka requires somewhere to rest and change horses.

It is led by a Mereton of the Abbachtkan government, Jion Klahss. She is an unusual Mereton – her background is the Xavarathian Faith. She purports to the Neutral Chaos of that particular group. Jion previously was a pirate child rescued by the monks in Daggerhaunt. Memories of rooftop escapades allure her to action before thinking things fully through.

Dangerous escapades seem to be part of family tradition:

Simean Klahss, the mereton's son, is missing, presumed dead after an adventurous excursion with Freya Heretofore and company caused him to lose his life. It has been painted as a gross failure of the Heretofore family, and directly lead to Corriander leaving his hometown as penance for the family guilt.

Klahss was enamoured with Freya and was trying to impress her with his ability to deal with aggressive threats during their adventures. They were becoming useful adventurers in training, with small incursions of goblins and dryads being dealt with by their small gang of want to be sellswords. Following the example of the Braves of Bahamut, the youthful troupe found adventure calling, but were less than perfect at categorising risk.

Finding evidence of a group of bandits setting up in the mountains near the Xavarathian monastry, the troupe wasted no time investigating and immediately set forth looking for the miscreants. Following the mountain crevasses to a small cave system, they found a group of bandits and the loot from merchant caravans that had been pilfered.

During the altercation, the group was captured by the bandits, and the troupe was brought before a silver haired mage who cast judgement on them before leaving – condemning the group to death, or worse. Several did not survive, and the only survivor was Freya, who managed to escape after a torrid time imprisoned.

Klahss was not recovered by the Mereton, and the Heretofore family was blamed for the teenagers hasty actions; Corriander was banished, and his group were cast aside from their position as respected adventurers of the town.

Layout

The Mereton’s house in Cosewell looks more like the monks embassy than a seat of government. Flags and bunting adorn the streets, the houses intricately carved from Mithralewood. The walls are daubed with a white plaster, decorated with reds and blues; the roofs slated with stone and ceramic tiles. Some buildings are interconnected with wooden walkways, but no building seems more than three stories tall.

“The Market” is a central building in the town square which encompasses a ground floor bustling marketplace where most goods can be acquired. There are groups looking for hired hands, and small shrines to Bahamut, Leshp, Tamarand are present – and overlooked. The largest shrine is to Xavarath, with the green robed monks partying through the town on a regular basis.

Factions & Personages

Lowson Brior is a monk. He is reasonably tall and immediately likeable, his hair falling in dreadlocks and decorated with jade and wooden beads. He is someone who might vouch for the party if they wished to get a formal introduction to the Monastery on good terms.

Miz – a former Joeshoe – is a well known personage in the town; people will remember the trainee monk being a firebrand and unteachable at times; a tearaway from the laws of the town, and constantly in trouble. His childhood friends are a bunch of petty criminals who work the Market for any coin that they can acquire – they would be easy prey for miscreants to subvert.

Hannit – A brave of Bahamut tends to the Bahamut shrine. His motives for staying in Cosewell are murky, at best. He wears blue monk robes, contrasting to the green robes that predominate the area. He’s an older priest, who seems like his age has remained static. Mysterious benefactor. He works closely with Ellie, a human monk, “too angry and too pretty to be a priest”.
