In Shar's domain of night I rest, So dreams may show me how I'm bless'd. If screams of terror break my sleep, Then Dendar's sunk her fang's too deep.—Source unknown, Folklore
Description
Dendar was described as a colossal serpent who spent her time devouring the nightmares and fears of both mortals and immortals. Some 300 ft long with blue-black scales, yellow eyes, and a huge maw filled with four fangs, spittle, and the bones of some of her former victims. The visage this being chose caused it to be the figure of worship for a sect of Yuan-Ti, whom renamed themselves to the Descendants of Dendar.
Role in the Pantheon
The night serpent's role in the overall pantheon of Kuselada is mixed, depending on the general culture. The devourer of dreams may be thought of as a terror of the blackest night, and feared. Some, like sections of Drow culture, would perceive Dendar to be a bastion of purity, whilst others, such as the Genasi, would be horrified by such worship of an evil being. Truth is in the eyes of the beholders, which may have their own opinions on this matter.
Creation Myth
Dendar is thought to have been created during the lull between Ascension wars in the pre-history of the world. Rumours coil around her life and obsfuscate the truth, but it seems plausible that she owes some of her creation to the actions of Diato the white following his rebuttal after his Ascension attempt. Whether this act of creation is considered successful or a failure in the eyes of the dragon is unknown.
Following her birth, Dendar was shunned by the other powerful entities of the early Kuselada world. Appearing often as partially draconic, she was somewhat respected in individual circumstances, but shunned when the Nine were all present - she was not one of them. Such an existence led to hiding from the world, and mixing with the remnants of Diato's experiments, a life that perpetually fed the resentment that was growing amongst these groups. It was not long before even these denizens turned on her, casting her out into the Abyss.
Powers
The Night Serpent was able to use her enormous size to crush victims with her bulk or to swallow them whole. Her forked tongue could be used to trip and entangle victims whom she could then inject with a sleep poison so she could absorb their nightmares. Her forks tongue also granted her the ability to whisper into the minds of mortals, twisting them to her will. This ability is inherited by the Mind Whisperers of her sect.
