Last time, an odd collection of people were thrust together in the town of Blademarket. Heading to an apothecary, they saw a building on-fire, being attacked by fire sprites. After saving a child and a puppy, they attracted the attention of the Tenders. Sequestered in The Rusty Bellows they await a meeting in the morning to answer questions about the night before.
Synopsis
Waking up in the morning, Benji gets up early and goes to wake the rest of the party in the creepiest way possible.
In the bar, a human waitress, Janie, was cleaning up the mess of the night before, whilst talking to her sister about the gossip of the town: that there was an attempt on the Duc's life, the culprit was caught - stabbed in the chest by Duc Lambertine, member of the Council Volfarii, and who's 73.
Luna is asked to tell Tomanas that the taps at the Bellows need looking at; and the guards outside the inn then escort the group to the Keep.
Sgt-at-arms Filligrand welcomes them to the keep, Benji asks lots of questions and finds out the Duc stabbed the assailant 3 times in the chest and threw him from the 3rd floor stained glass windows, party are shown into the Mereton. Benji explains that the fire spirits are unsettled and he is trying to find out why. The Duc enters and orders the party to find out more about the elementals and the fire; city resources better used elsewhere given the recent attempts on various lives - some successful and some not.
Stepping outside, we investigate the body and find a dagger coated with a similar poison to the one on the dagger used to stab Bugo; and a tattoo on his arm of a tower with an arrow slit and portcullis. Bugo's attacker then killed himself using poison. The group head to the Shambles where there is an apothecary ran by a Gnome who thinks Tomanas drives a hard bargain. He has a moustache and flamboyant hair, a true salesman. The group head in to his dusty store. The counter is a plank across 2 barrels and a wine-rack style collection of bottles at the back: Rinn's Apothecary - the premiere place for healing potions and little helpers for 'all' your needs. The poison reacts badly with a healing potion but after 45mins he finds a way to neutralise the poison and stabilise the wound. Benji purchases the potion and the group heads past Pott's Potions, back towards their hostelry.
As we turn the corner near Pott's, we see a 40+ year old man carrying a bag stuffed with Phasemoth wings. He's being lead away by the guards towards the Mereton's Keep - It's Potts's, his wife was supposed to be looking after their daughter. Approaching the shop, the only wall standing is the front wall, with the door in-place and closes. The rest of the building is a burnt-out shell. In front of the door is a cog with AMC on it, it is a sign from the Cogglesbroom, who are most likely looking after the child.
Zeed notices something in the building; but the rest of the party head on to the Bellows to treat Bugo. It's an iron ring fixed to the floor; like a trapdoor ring. Digging away he finds a trapdoor revealing stone steps leading to an underground chamber with water-damaged store cupboards and an iron chest secured with a lock. Breaking into it, there is a recess where something used to be - it looks like someone else has been here first.
Meanwhile the rest of the group arrive at the Bellows to be told that Bugo has left to seek out Wizards, the Concordance. Luna is told to return to Janie later to work on the tap that's broken in the bar.
Sitting down to catch up on plans, the group decide Luna should reluctantly be the leader, and Zeed returns. As a decision is made to head to the center of town to ask the guards if they know where Bugo is, Zeed and Benji hang back to discuss the brass ring found in Pott's. Benji identifies the ring as an elemental summoning control ring, meaning the sprites were under someone else's control.
The group wander back to the Mereton's keep to talk to the guards to see if they've seen him, but he's not been their way, but if they see him, they'll send him back to the Bellows.
Luna, Berwick and Benji head to the forge district to investigate the forge that burnt down and they come across another copper band for controlling sprites and a symbol matching the one found on the dead man's tattoo engraved into the floor.
Zeed, Hrolf and Shadow head to the weaponsmiths, via the north of the city due to an accident of navigation, and upon reaching the Blademarket they enter the shop of Marius. He identifies the blade used as having a reservoir bulb and sends them to see his friend, Patrick Theodore, who specialises in small blades. As they enter, Patrick hits himself with the forge hammer, and is healed by Shadow. He identifies the blade as coming from Sudvanne as few people are capable of crafting one and would love to get his hands on one. In conversation with Zeed, he reveals he was the one who went down the well and left the markings.
